THE DAY EVIL DIED

                                                  A Dalit’s war poem

In the midst of war, there was a sense of peace

As bullets found their targets, time itself did cease

When blasts from cannons filled the air, they echoed away in silence

As cries seemed as songs ringing out in vain, we searched for truth and guidance

While all this happened the day went on, this was the day evil died

When fear was abundant and bravery scarce, we were safe and somehow protected

As we longed to feel security once again, our hopes went undetected

In the body was no life – the soul was dead, but our promises were kept

As we prayed for the present to pass, we closed our eyes and slept

While all this happened the day continued on, this was the day evil died

When the prayers of the rich were answered by the poor, our hearts began to beat

As lies were told in the place of truths, our knowledge was stern against defeat

In the abstance of love there were only tears, they washed away the embers

When all is forgiven we will never forget, the time no one remembers

While all this happened the day ended, this was the day evil died
