Encyclopedia of Dalits in
Dr. Sanjay Paswan
An Eminent Sociologist, Doctorate on Scheduled Castes
and Member of Parliament
Dr. Paramanshi Jaideva
An Historian, Eminent Authority on Scheduled Castes Affairs with Sound
Knowledge of Pali Language
The importance of Dalits
in our society can be analysed by the fact that
the Social Customs at the time of a new born baby and cutting of placenta are
performed by a female scheduled caste dai, Even
at the time of death, agni dah(cremation) is entrusted to a scheduled caste Dom.There are so many other obligations, which
probably can not be fulfilled without their laudable basic support.
Here is a whole world of Dalits, under one title. You
may be desiring to know all about the important section of our society — known
as Dalits. No doubt there are already some works on Dalits and their problems, still there has been a
room for works of worth on the subject.
This research based, extensive,
exhaustive, comprehensive, authentic, and analytical series is an endeavour in the same vien. This is no small wonder. It is a huge
treasure of knowledge and reference on Dalits. The wise authors—both of them are authority
on Dalit affairs—have accomplished the work
painstakingly, following a toilsome job, which took a toll of several
years. While flipping through the
4182 pages of the encyclopaedic work, the reader will
undergo a new, refreshing experience. Apart from bigger issues, the study
covers even the minute details—History, Society, Religion, Culture—virtually
each and everything about Dalits in India.
This voluminous work is aimed at satisfying the keen urge of politicians,
planners, sociologists, anthropoloists, bureaucrats, and
all scholars.
Here, you will find complete and detailed contents of 11 Volumes,to
understand the importance of the complete set.

Pain
and Awakening: The Dynamics of Dalit Identity in Bihar, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh
Edited by
Fernando Franco
In the course of the last decade, a new Dalit discourse has emerged challenging not only the
received academic wisdom on caste but also the way in which Dalit
‘praxis’ was understood and implemented. The ‘increased visibility’ of Dalits in contemporary India has been acquired at a heavy
price: a rise in atrocities against them. This book, on the pain and awakening
experienced by various Dalit communities, is an
attempt to contribute to this challenge and incorporate other concerns into the
ongoing debate. The rise of political parties and socio-political movements
claiming to represent the interests of the Dalits has
brought to center-stage the importance of ‘political identities’ in India.
Assuming that the process of a group’s
identity-formation is the result of a composite process involving changes in
the social and economic relationships between the individual, the group and the
‘other’, the authors of the book distinguish two major structural components of
this process: the ideological-symbolic and the material-productive. On the basis of an extensive household and
individual sample survey covering 14 districts, 77 villages and around 4,500
households in the states of Bihar, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, the study
examines whether there have been significant changes in the
ideological-symbolic component of Dalit identity,
and, in addition, whether these changes have been matched by corresponding
improvements in the Dalits’ control over economic and
human resources.
By
analytically dividing social groups into the categories of Upper Castes, Upper
Backward Castes, Most Backwards Castes and Dalits,
this study is also able to examine, in a meaningfully differentiated manner,
the relative changes in attitudes and economic position of Non Dalit groups in these states. In short, changes in Dalit identity are also analysed
in terms of the particular characteristics of each state: high growth rates in
Gujarat, increased political mobilization in Uttar Pradesh, and Naxalite violence in Bihar. The book will be useful for
activists and intellectuals engaged in understanding the changes taking place
in the Dalit community and committed to elaborating
new strategies for action.
